You are never too old to want a great smile. You are never too old to deserve a great smile.

And you are never too old to create the smile of your dreams.

We have seen what “invisible braces” have been able to do for many of our adult patients in Reading, MA. For years, many adults avoided orthodontic treatments because they did not want to wear braces.

Thankfully, that’s no longer your only option. With the development of Invisalign® clear aligners, adults can discreetly straighten their teeth.

Invisalign vs. Braces for Adults

It’s perfectly understandable why you, as an adult, would not want to wear braces, especially if you previously wore them as a teenager.

Braces are fairly conspicuous. It’s hard to hide the fact that you have a series of metal brackets attached to your teeth with a wire running between them.

If you have a job, especially one that involves meeting with clients and customers face-to-face, you may not feel comfortable talking to them with braces on your teeth. You may be concerned that the braces could become a distraction from what you are hoping to accomplish.

Likewise, you may not feel like socializing with family and friends with braces on your teeth. And since treatment with braces can take years in some cases, you may not want to put your social life on hold for that long.

Clear aligners can alleviate all of those concerns. First and foremost, the aligners are clear — as in transparent. When you place them over your teeth, they will blend in with your smile. Few people are likely to notice you have them on throughout the course of your treatment.

This way they won’t be a distraction when you are out and about for professional or personal reasons.

A Comfortable Option

Of course, the discreet nature of clear aligners is only one of the reasons you may prefer then to braces.

When you have braces, you are going to be dealing with discomfort. That’s just part of the deal. Each time your braces are adjusted, you will feel the tightness. Between adjustments, you may feel the irritation of the brackets against the soft tissues of your mouth.

You’ll also need to make some changes to accommodate your braces. This starts with what you eat … or rather, what you shouldn’t eat. When you have braces, you should try to avoid chewy, crunchy, hard, and sticky foods. You don’t want to accidental break or pull your brackets free or bent your wires.

At the same time, you will need to learn some new techniques for keeping your teeth clean. Flossing is even more important when you have braces, although it may require a different approach than you’re used to using.

Again, clear aligners make your treatment simpler. With this treatment, all you have to do is wear each aligner as directed and replace it with the next aligner in the series every few weeks or so.

The smooth plastic won’t irritate the soft tissue of your mouth, and it doesn’t have small pieces that can break off.

And with Invisalign, you are supposed to remove the aligners when you eat. This means you can continue eating all the foods that you love throughout your treatment. After meals, just brush and floss like your normally and clean up your aligner before putting it back in place.
